pres-obamaWashington, D.C. (CNN) — The crisis unfolding in Iraq is turning into a politically delicate situation in Washington, D.C. and overseas.

President Barack Obama announced during a news conference Thursday, that he is sending military advisers to Iraq to help advise Iraqi forces.

He emphasized that the U.S. would not return to a combat role in the country.

“We do not have the ability to simply solve this problem by sending in tens of thousands of troops and committing the kind of blood and treasure that has been expended in Iraq,” said President Obama. “Ultimately this is something that is going to have to be solved by the Iraqis,” he said.

The president also said he has not ruled out small, limited airstrikes.

The largest oil refinery in Iraq is on the verge of falling into the hands of a militant group known as the Islamic State of Iraq & Syria, or ISIS. If it’s seized, the militants would have the ability to control the sale of gasoline and cut power across parts of Iraq.

The U.S. withdrew its final combat troops from Iraq at the end of 2011, nearly nine years after leading the invasion that toppled longtime leader, Saddam Hussein.
